Lonely Parenting

on July 31, 2014

For the first 9 months, minus the first 2 maybe, my life was filled with baby groups and chatting with the other mummies, mummies whose babies are all the same age. But then, the 9 month mark hits and mummies have to start going back to work. I made it to Elvis’ 13 month birthday, but for those last 4 months, life became more lonely.

Everyone who goes back to work do completely different hours, no one’s working patterns match up. I work 4 mornings, Mummy S works 5 afternoons, B works 4 days, so does Mummy J – but they have different days off! And then, you have to fit in with all of the children’s routines. Elvis likes to sleep all afternoon, do I upset him, unsettle him just to have a playdate?

Maybe once or twice a week, but if all of those mummies have different times off, I have to pick which mummy and baby to limit Elvis’ unsettling. And don’t even get me started on trying to see any of my friends who also happen to be mummies without their children. No one seems able to make time for that!

It all results in some quite lonely times, I guess. Like when Elvis takes a 3 hour nap and I have to sit around the house cleaning and packing for an inevitable house move. None of which really help with my ongoing identity crisis, and I doubt it’ll get easier with two! And sometimes I think no one else realises this, be it those exact mummies listed above, be it soon-to-be mummies who already know how to parent, to mummies who had their own perfect journey years ago.
