Craft Corner: First Birthday Card

on January 7, 2015

I don’t really like birthday cards. I feel like they’re a waste of money and normally just get thrown in the bin, so for Elvis’ first birthday I decided to make, I guess a signing book instead. We did still receive some birthday cards (people who couldn’t make his party), but I tried to even send on the “guest” pages to family to send back! All I needed for this was:

  • a pinboard
  • sparkly/holographic card
  • scissors
  • wool
  • pins
  • blue paint and blue glitter paint
  • a star shape
  • pens

I guess, with the right supplies, you don’t need the 2 types of paint. I used the paint to cover the pinboard, making it as dark as possible because my theme for Elvis’ first birthday card was the night sky. In fact it was only after spray painting it blue that I decided to very roughly go over it all with the glitter paint I have – night skies sparkle!

Then, using one of Elvis’ star shapes from a shape sorter (multi-purpose), I began cutting out stars from sheets of red and gold holographic paper. With the scrap parts, I cut a few smaller stars, too. Then I hole punched in the top of each star and threaded some wool threw to make a loop. I purposefully did not measure any of the wool so that they would all hang at different lengths.

Here’s where I fail at this craft – I failed to buy/find the right kind of pin. I was looking for actual pins, not drawing pins and I wanted them to be the right colour. I still don’t know what colour that is. Maybe black? I failed, and borrowed some pins from my mum — yellow ducks! Not exactly fitting for a night sky, but quite good for a little boy who loves ducks!

All I then had to do was get people to write their birthday message on a star. I had a few people double, triple check with me that they didn’t need to bring a card, hopefully next year they won’t worry so much. And then I hung them up!

My plan is to use the stars in a scrapbook or something after his second birthday and redecorate the board for a new scene. I like the idea of making a tree somehow. Or flowers.

Here’s the finished product:
