Monthly Update: Month 21

Weight, Length, Height: Still 2 stone by our inaccurate scales, 78cm tall so there’s been a little spurt!

Routine: Up at half 6 or 7, when there’s nursery, home by half one and nap by 2. Later wake up on weekends but napping by 1. Dinner between 4 and half 5, bath at 6.15 and bed at 7.

Bedtime: 7pm but he can talk to himself for a bit. Or go straight to sleep.

Naps/Length: Two-three hours in the afternoon. He wakes and often has a tantrum now which could be because he’s tired still but he can’t have longer due to nursery. Maybe it’s a blood sugar issue and he needs a snack before napping.

Number of feeds in 24hrs: three meals, 1-2 snacks and a second breakfast at nursery!

Favourite toy/objects: NiNi his bouncy horse, his desk which he calls a car and climbs under to drive it.

Clothing age: mainly 18-24 but still in smaller for trousers due to his waist, not his leg length.

Foot length/Shoe Size: size 6 but he refused to be measured properly!

Milestones: a three word sentence – baby sit chair. And loads of other speech ones. His imaginary play is improving too. I guess his desk/car is roleplay and he loves his little doll house and putting animals/people in bed, on the toilet, cooking dinner, driving a car. He can also walk pretty much all the way home from nursery (a 15 minute walk for me).

Our swimming ability: he hasn’t been since before Robin was born. I haven’t since September!

What I’m reading/Favourite Books: He loves Bizzy Bear books, Tabby McTat and Gruffalo. I’m still reading Storm of Swords and also The 100.

New Foods: He tried pulled pork and, bearing in mind he’s not too keen on meat, he ate some and went back for more!

Words: Sleeve, sheep and numbers up to 10 (not in order) are some of this month’s new words. He also now calls our family friend MoMo. He can also name most of the main crew of Thomas Trains. Except Thomas. And he copies quicker now – money after I said it and also “funny haha”. He says night night but with this amazingly funny accent so it sounds like noight and Daddy and I laugh so he says it more!

Signs: he can sign zebra after I showed him it once!

Number of Teeth: No new ones – still 10.

Fears: nothing in particular. Or at least nothing new or that scared him this month!

Monthly Update: Month 20

I really regret not doing these for the past 7 months. I think, because I stopped getting him weighed and things becoming more constant, I didn’t see the point. But what about the milestones? Maybe there were a few months when he didn’t do anything new so I got bored. He did continue developing though – certainly his communication.

Weight/Length/Height: about 72cm tall and about 2 stone but our weighing scales aren’t super accurate. I, at 39 weeks pregnant, am 14 stone!

Bedtime: 7pm for him, sometimes the same for me – haha, pregnancy for ya!

Naps/Length: He has one a day. Sometimes so do I. His is from 2-4 but ideally would be 1pm. He’d still need waking at 4! We have tried a day without napping and we both survived, but the next day he had a melt down!

Number of feeds in 24hrs: Three solid meals, a snack and extra breakfast at nursery.

Favourite toy/objects: His bouncy horse (NiNi), his shape sorter (which he cheats at) and his VTech Toot Toot Cars and garage. He also loves to wear hats or cover his face and walk around “blind”.

Clothing age: 12-18 trousers but they need to be rolled up and have an elasticated waist. 18-24 T-shirts and 2+ for vests – on the rare occasion he wears them.

Foot length/Size: He’s been the same shoe size since 15 months old – size 5.5 and he doesn’t seem anywhere close to having a growth spurt!

Milestones: He has just learnt to say Da and Nanny along with Baby. He’ll say Mama but not often! He signs a lot more over the past month. And he loves to complete jigsaws. He bounces and says Jump! He’s started dancing which is the cutest thing ever!

Our swimming ability: I gave up swimming at 20 weeks pregnant and took up yoga. Elvis kicks and breaststrokes his arms as I hold him in the water. He’s also super confident walking in the shallow end and dunking unaided. He’s also finally started spitting out pool water rather than drinking it.

What I’m reading and his favourite book: I’m in the middle of Storm of Swords. He loves his Bizzy Bear books and simple word books if they have animals in them! Or tractors.

New Foods: He’s finally started eating meat! Processed as he refuses fresher meats but it’s a step!

Teeth: 10 in total. 6 on top, 4 on bottom including a molar each side top and bottom. He hasn’t had a new tooth in 3 months-ish.

Signs: I’m still teaching him new signs, especially animals with no sounds. I love that he’s started signing snake with a sssss sound, frog and giraffe.

Words: Mentioned above. I love baby and star! And hoover!

Fears: toys that move “on their own”. I don’t think he understands how they move and it freaks him out.

Banana Bathtime Dressed

Okay, the title makes no sense… except these are three of the words that Elvis can now sign! His first sign was help and then bathtime. He was just under one when he did help and maybe 13 months for telling us it was bathtime. I found these two really helpful because help means that Elvis doesn’t have to squinny at me to get a toy, climb onto a chair, open his cup. Some mums have said that help made their baby lazy, asking for help all the time. I haven’t noticed that. Yet.

Bathtime is also useful as it signifies bedtime  and has been used when Elvis simply wants an early night!

The two most done signs by me to him have been sleep, food and more. Well, at 15 months he has finally started doing food! Along with dressed and banana. Well, banana isn’t exact but it is two fingertips touching. He tries to do more but he really just claps. He also tries all done but really only rubs his hands together, which is also reading. All of these occurred within a few days. He might even be trying to do monkey and repeated pig for daddy! I think it simply took Elvis all of these 16 months to want to sign as he now watches my hands more attentively and allows me to take his hands and correct a sign.

I better start signing more!

Nursery Reservations

It finally happened. I have finally had some sad thoughts about nursery.

We were at a toddler group and Elvis was happily playing in the garden when he started to look around for me. He didn’t seem worried and, when he saw me, he didn’t smile in relief; he was just checking on me. What happens at nursery when he wants to check where I am?

Toddling

I’m officially calling Elvis a toddling baby. He’s not a walker yet, but he can do steps between objects, unaided, wibbly, wobbly steps. He crossed a room at a play group the other morning – maybe about 1 meter – completely unaided. He has officially taken his first steps!

I’ve decided that his new found toddling skill has made him the silent assassin. When I’m in a¬†different room, wandering around or even doing chores in the same room, crawling Elvis is loud when he gets close and I try my hardest to not stand on him, toddling Elvis… no such luck. I turn around and he’s standing there, scaring the life out of me. He toddles with such a wobble and usually such caution that he’s silent and then BAM! right there.

And it’s made his stair climbing interesting as he decides half way up/down that he’s going to try and toddle a few steps because he can toddle, so why does he need to crawl all the time, and stairs are like the flat floor, right? Except he can’t toddle down the stairs so he launches into me as I am always right behind him.

But, yeah, a toddling baby! Each day now I can see his confidence in stepping increasing so it won’t be long before we go shoe shopping!

Preparing for Nursery

A fellow Mummy advised me to start doing lots with Elvis, to get him used to not always being alone at home with me before I pack him off to nursery. I’m not sure how much I agree, but it has made me question if there is anything I should do to prepare him.

There’s fewer than 12 weeks now until it all happens, until I graduate this first year and our new family life begins – the one where we work and study, the one that lasts for the next 15 years.

Monthly Update: Month 10

Weight: 22lb 5oz at 9.5 months.

Bedtime: Still at 7pm, maybe slightly earlier if he finishes his milk quickly.

Naps/Length: Still 2 or 3 a day, from 1hr to 2hours depending on total over the day.

Number of feeds in 24hrs: 2, and sometimes just the one! We might not make it to 12 months of breastfeeding at this rate! I now give Elvis a cup of cow’s milk with breakfast simply because he stopped eating his cereal.

Favourite toy/objects: Cubes, books, balls from his ball pit.

Clothing age: 9-12 months for everything.

Foot length: 10.9cm

Milestones: Can stand unaided for… quite a while. We’ve never managed to time it! Don’t think he’s done any others. He can put objects into a box. Oh, and he’s started clapping!

My swimming ability: 1058m on average.

What I’m reading: Still on Clash of Kings, I keep seeing the countdown for season 4 and thinking, oh I only have a few chapters left… I will try and finish it this weekend! Challenge, accepted!

New Foods: He’s eating meat now and still loves his pasta. I’m not sure we’ve given him anything new. Unless you count the prawn cracker I naughtily gave him. Or the cheesecake my Auntie gave him without permission!

Number of Stairs: All of them, I just haven’t timed him. He hasn’t figured out the safe way of coming down though.

Time Across the Landing: Haven’t timed him in a while. Oops.

Words: None. Booo! I did read somewhere that language is hereditary and I was a late bloomer. I didn’t start speaking until I was 4 after speech therapy, so he has a while to go before I worry!

Fears: He doesn’t like me pretending to be an elephant. Weirdo. He dislikes having doors closed but I think that’s more a dislike than fear. He still hates the hoover, hairdryers and similar noises.

Walk On By

It first happened a few days ago. I thought it was a fluke. Then we caught it on tape. Now we do it every bathtime…

Elvis can walk using his push along walker!

Downstairs we have laminate floor and rugs so Elvis slips too easily, so Mr Second Hand VTech Walker has gone upstairs. At bathtime we now make E walk from the stairs to his bedroom, then in his nappy to the bathroom and then back to his bedroom after his bath.

I’m going to start doing it during the day, too.

More mobility!

Proud Parent!

Elvis is almost 25 weeks old and is so close to 6 months! He’s become this cheeky, smiley, mainly happy baby boy.

Yesterday as I was trying to get him to take his first nap, I thought he’d fallen asleep as his room went quiet.

Nope, he’d rolled over.

He did it 5 times in total. The little scamp!

Venturing Out

As it’s still the weekend and we all got a second lie in (well yesterday it was 7am when Elvis and I awoke, 8am for all of us today) I was quite pleased that it felt slightly cooler out and that we could all perhaps venture out to town and proper shops. Not just the food and second hand shops nearby.

I only wanted to go to try and find a few things for Elvis, but it needed to be proper baby shops.

And I found everything I wanted!
